As easy as this technique is to pick up extra distance, there are two other
aspects of your swing that you need to learn to control before you can achieve
the "full benefits" from the delayed hand release technique:
You need to learn how to eliminate "muscle tension" from the top of your swing
which is the primary cause of an "early hand release".
Your "golf swing tempo" and "timing" will need to be "reset".
http://www.powergolftips.com/early-wrist-cock-lag-drill/
By delaying your wrist cock on the backswing you will have a better chance of
creating more lag and speed into impact. An early wrists cock robs you of power,
by making your swing very armsy.

[disclaimer] I am not a professional. I am offering advice only because it was
asked for. Any advice offered by me is based solely on 30 years of personal
golfing experience and observation/study and may not be correct, only partially
correct, or may not apply to all swing styles. Any golfer using my advice does
so at their own risk. By posting my "theories" I leave myself open to criticism,
and I welcome it if done constructively (helps me to learn). [disclaimer/]
Lag, IMO cannot be consciously manipulated in the downswing - the downswing
happens too fast for the mind to think and react - but rather is a result of
what happens in the setup, backswing and transition.
I can poke the ball out there quite a ways, and people often ask me how I do it
when it doesn't even look like I'm trying. Here are my key fundamentals to
creating and maintaining lag:
1. The swing should be fundamentally sound. Think setup, clubface, club path,
body (pivot) in that order. By this I mean you should be able to get to the top
and transition to the downswing in such a way that the club will be delivered to
the ball square and on-plane. If you are swinging over-the-top or with an open
clubface, for instance, no amount of drills will help with lag because your
arms, hands, and body will be making all kinds of compensations (usually
involving casting or early release) to get the club on-plane or square IMO. Fix
these issues before working on lag.
2. You MUST NOT overswing. By this I mean your arms must stop going back when
your shoulders stop turning in the backswing. Lag, IMO, is created in part by
your wrist c*** going back and in part by the change in direction during
transition. More importantly, lag is maintained in the downswing by a constant
acceleration of the hands (which are connected to the arms, which are connected
to the shoulders, which are connected to the torso...getting the idea yet?). If
you swing your arms past your shoulder turn, then you will have to swing them
faster, earlier, so they can catch back up to the shoulders in the downswing.
You will not be able to maintain the acceleration of your arms for long and the
result is an early release (the release starts when your hands stop accelerating
and the clubhead starts overtaking them, IMO).
3. Closetgolfboy made a post recently that quoted Jason Gore as saying "swing
slower" for more distance. A great post, but I would change that to "accelerate
slower" for more distance. When I swing, I have a certain (limited) amount of
stored energy that I created during my backswing. I want to use that energy to
ultimately accelerate the hands in the downswing. The longer I can accelerate my
hands, the deeper into the downswing I can hold my lag. I don't want to "shoot
my wad" with a sudden burst of acceleration to initiate my downswing. This is
probably the most difficult thing to get right. For me, it feels like my
shoulders are doing the accelerating and my arms are along for the ride for the
first part of the downswing, then my arms/hands take over about waist high.
Training aids and drills I consider good for getting the feeling of
creating/maintaining lag:
1. The good old impact bag.
2. Broom/heavy club: good for getting the feeling of passive arms in the
downswing. Easy to tell by swoosh of broom where youre releasing. I've also
taped strips of paper to my driver to give me audio feedback on where I'm
releasing.
3. The step-into (baseball) drill: this one if done correctly gives you a great
feel for creating more lag during the transition by starting to unwind your
lower body (legs and hips) before youve completed your backswing (this is major
factor in how Sergio creates so much lag, IMO). Also helps to develop a good
pivot motion. Using a mid-iron, take your normal stance. During the initial part
of the backswing, slide your lead foot back so that it touches the rear foot
(you can start with it here as well). Initiate the downswing by stepping back
towards the target with your lead foot. The timing of this move is important;
you want to take your step before the backswing is completed.
4. Work your way up to full swings: lots of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 shots focusing on
proper impact position (this where impact bag helps as well)
5. The mother of all drills, will prove your dedication: requires a watch or
timer. Start by taking a two-minute swing. By this I mean take a swing the way
you think it should be done, but complete one swing in two-minutes. Now take ten
seconds off the timer and do it again (i.e. complete one swing in 110 seconds).
Continue doing this until youve reached a 10 second swing, then do it in 2
second intervals (8, 6, 4) until youve reached normal swing speed. It will take
about 15 - 20 minutes and a lot of patience. I do this drill whenever I make a
swing change to try to ingrain it, especially if its a change that I have
little chance of consciously doing in the full swing at full speed (like
creating/maintaining lag).
